Conspiracy theory is a term that originally was a neutral descriptor for any claim of civil, criminal or political conspiracy. However, it has become largely pejorative and used almost exclusively to refer to any fringe theory which explains a historical or current event as the result of a secret plot by conspirators of almost superhuman power and cunning.

Conspiracy theories are viewed with skepticism by the scientific community and academia, and often ridiculed by pundits, because they are rarely supported by any convincing evidence and contrast with institutional analysis, which focuses on people's collective behavior in publicly known institutions, as recorded in scholarly material and mainstream media reports, to explain historical or current events, rather than speculate on the motives and actions of secretive coalitions of individuals.

The term is therefore often used dismissively in an attempt to characterize a belief as outlandishly false and held by a person judged to be a crank or a group confined to the lunatic fringe. Such characterization is often the subject of dispute due to its possible unfairness and inaccuracy.

In the United States of the late 20th and early 21st centuries, conspiracy theories have become commonplace in mass media. This has contributed to conspiracism emerging as a cultural phenomenon and the possible replacement of democracy by conspiracy as the dominant paradigm of political action in the public mind. According to anthropologists Todd Sanders and Harry G. West, "evidence suggests that a broad cross section of Americans today…gives credence to at least some conspiracy theories." Belief in conspiracy theories has therefore become a topic of interest for sociologists, psychologists and experts in folklore.

Conspiracy theories?
Q. Hi you, I like conspiracy theories, Can you tell me examples of subliminal messages, and hidden hints? Can you tell me stories when the TV lies, where do you think a conspiracy is going on?

A. One TV example is when you are watching a movie and the main character is obviously drinking either a Pepsi or a Coke. You know then, that the rest of the movie you would not see a drink of the other brand. This is supposed to have an effect on people, although I don't know how much it really does. In Disney movies there are supposed to be sexual references, such as in the Little Mermaid there was a time when bubbles kicked up spelled SEX. I think there was another reference in Aladdin, but I don't remember what it was. Reality TV shows are usually not exactly what they show. For example, I think it was uncovered that contestants in The Amazing Race were often slowed down by their camera men, causing the results to be skewed based… [cont.]

Why do people believe conspiracy theories?
Q. Doing research for a website about conspiracy theories. What is it that makes some people believe conspiracy theories? Please see my other questions for more conspiracy theory stuff. Thanks.

A. I can't figure it out myself. Maybe they just find it far too disturbing that it could happen the way it did, so they have to make up these elaborate conspiracies because then it makes more sense to them and, in some ways, they can control the uncontrollable.

Was it Bush that started sanctioning conspiracy theories?
Q. In September 1901, William McKinley, allegedly a Rockefeller tool, was shot by Leon Czolgosz (son of Polish immigrants), labeled as an "anarchist" although he didn't belong to any rebel groups. Czolgosz was immediately "tried and executed by the Establishment." The assassination was manipulated by the Establishment to subtly discredit rebellion and anyone who might justifiably dissent. The Elite, in any age, would actually prefer to prohibit dissent. It is similar to our Bush saying: "Let us never tolerate outrageous conspiracy theories concerning the attacks of September the 11th." and by implication - let us never tolerate conspiracy theorists.

A. I have not heard of any present day Conspiracy theorists being "sanctioned". Unfortunately they are still alive.
