A bestseller is a book that is identified as extremely popular by its inclusion on lists of currently top selling titles that are based on publishing industry and book trade figures and published by newspapers, magazines, or bookstore chains. Some lists are broken down into classifications and specialties (number one best selling new cookbook, novel, nonfiction, etc.). The New York Times Best Seller list is one of the best-known bestseller lists for the US. The New York Times Best Seller list only tracks National and Independent book stores; it does not include sales from Internet retailers or In everyday use, the term bestseller is not usually associated with a specified level of sales, and may be used very loosely indeed in publisher's publicity. Bestsellers tend not to be books considered of superior academic value or literary quality, though there are exceptions. Lists simply give the highest-selling titles in the category over the stated period. Some books have sold many more copies than contemporary "bestsellers", but over a long period of time. Blockbusters for films and chart-toppers in recorded music are similar terms, although, in film and music, these measures generally are related to industry sales figures for attendance, requests, broadcast plays, or units sold. Particularly in the case of novels, a large budget, and a chain of literary agents, editors, publishers, reviewers, retailers, and marketing efforts are involved in "making" bestsellers. What current novel is considered literature & at the same time is a New York Times or National bestseller? Does The Memory Keeper Daughter falls under this category. Some says that a bestseller that is also literature is called mainstream. Is that correct? Asked by Ray Mystery - Fri Feb 29 07:10:52 2008 - - 2 Answers - 1 Comments A. I haven't read any of his books yet, but I think Ian McEwan's novels fit the literary/bestseller category. Cormac McCarthy would also fit that description. If you haven't read McCarthy's "The Road" yet you should pick up a copy. It is a phenomenal book. Toni Morrison is another one. Answered by T M - Fri Feb 29 07:37:13 2008 What is a bestseller when we refer to books? Q. How does a book become a best seller? Asked by robin - Thu Sep 7 03:24:48 2006 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments A. Most of the time, a book gets called a best seller when a news orgainzation, The New York Times is the best known source of this, checks with the publishing companies to find out which books are selling the most copies in a certain period of time, usually a week or month. If a book sells the most copies or a very high volume for a few weeks in a row, it gets called a best seller in the New York Times literature section. Publishers then use this info to further promote the book. Answered by John E - Thu Sep 7 03:33:43 2006 Is it wrong to prefer a bestseller over a classic?
Q. I've read several american and Russian classics that I found to be enjoyable, but they weren't exactly my cup of tea. I would much rather sit down for a good few hours and dig into a romance novel. My parents always say things like, "It doesn't get any better than the classics! How could you prefer reading THAT over Mark Twain?" Does it make me any dumber to enjoy reading Jane Green over Mark Twain?? Asked by Eve - Mon Sep 22 23:23:10 2008 - - 10 Answers - 0 Comments A. No, of course not. Just like you, I don't know why but I prefer the bestseller to classics. Yes, classics are good, even some of them are masterpiece, but I do find (some of) them boring. The story might seem very slow, while I'm one of them who prefer stories which are "straight to the point". People say To Kill A Mockingbird is really good, but man! I dont like wasting my time to read 1/3 of the book just to find out about those children daily life! It's exhausting! LOL Mark Twain is great though, I think your parents are right about this one ;) Everyone has his/her preference, and that is good! It means that you have your own taste.
